The gift of life

People who have received blood or who have given blood have a special understanding of this precious gift of life. Blood is a human tissue that cannot be manufactured. The only way one person receives blood is for another person to care enough to give up one hour of time and a pint of blood. Blood is separated into components before distribution, so with each donation you can help up to three people.

In 1947 the  Red Cross launched the first national civilian blood program which revolutionized blood banking in the Untied States. The Red Cross had been informally recruiting blood donors for a few hospital as early as the late 1930's.

Locally, the Fulton County Chapter has carried on this tradition. We have established strong community ties and gained the support of volunteer blood donors to meet the needs of hospitals in our region.

Bloodmobile Coordinator is Diane Morr and her committee members are Virginia Bamonte (Archbold), Barb Hite (Delta), Margaret Sutton (Fayette) and Marle Weber (Wauseon).

The Chapter sponsors over 35 bloodmobiles each year. These bloodmobiles collected 2797 pints of lifesaving blood last year.

Each pint of blood can help up to three patients- depending on the individual needs of each patient.”

The Chapter also provides volunteer  who make emergency runs to/from Fulton County Health Center and Toledo Blood Services or Medical College of Ohio transporting blood for patients in immediate need of blood.

General requirements

  • Donors must be at least 17 years of age (there is no upper age limit).
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds.
  • Have not had hepatitis since the age of eleven.
  • Be in general good health.
  • Positive ID now required

Donors must wait eight weeks between donations, and are encouraged to have eaten within the last four hours. Increasing fluid intake prior to donation is especially important! Drink plenty of milk, juice, or water. To help to have a good iron level, it is suggested that for a few days before you try to donate that you eat plenty of protein, green leafy vegetables and cut down on your caffeine intake- especially caffeine pop and coffee.

Prior to donation, donors are asked questions about their health to ensure that donating blood will not cause any problems to the donor or recipient. All blood is typed and tested after each donation

PINT SIZE BLOOD DRIVE

The students from the Elm Street Elementary School in Wauseon sponsored a "pint-size" blood drive on February 26, 2007 from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM The students have done the entire donor recruiting for this special drive. The goal of the drive is to help educate children and their parents on the importance of blood donation and encourage the parents to become regular donors—and hopefully get the children interested so when they are old enough they will also become donors.

The Wauseon Elm Street Elementary School staff, students and their parents sponsored a very successful Pint-Size bloodmobile on February 26, 2007!

Principal Mr. David Burkholder, Emma Wigfiled (Adult), Kupono Williams, Kahe Williams, Shyla Gates (tall girl all in black), Morgan Guise (pink coat), Matthew Menife (short boy with red shirt), Tatiana Williams (in front with purple & green coat), Melinda Robinson (adult)

Our Board member Ed Gajdostik gives blood at the Evergreen Community Bloodmobile

Over a year ago Walter Seeman from Swanton  needed 66 units of blood to survive a ruptured aneurysm. Doctors told him he had lost 90% of his blood during his ordeal. During surgery he was given 27 units of blood –about 5 times what the human body holds! The following day he used 37 more units of blood. His surgeon had to call for every unit of his rare blood type in Northwest Ohio. Walt made a miraculous recovery, so to return the favor to those who had donated the blood that helped save his life, he and his wife, Margie hosted a blood drive in Swanton on January 30, 2007 to help replenish the stock. He also celebrated his upcoming birthday at the event – a birthday he might never have lived to see without the help of his gifted surgeons and the blood that so many donors had given—he truly received the “Gift of Life”.

Her son, Zach, recruited Jennifer Pease, a teacher at Leggett School to donate blood at the Elm Street School’s first "Pint-Size" Bloodmobile. Zach is a third grade student at the school. The students were responsible for recruiting donors for their drive. The drive collected 73 pints of blood - well over their goal.
