Blood Services
The gift of life People who have received blood or who have given blood have a special understanding of this precious gift of life. Blood is a human tissue that cannot be manufactured. The only way one person receives blood is for another person to care enough to give up one hour of time and a pint of blood. Blood is separated into components before distribution, so with each donation you can help up to three people.

Bloodmobile Coordinator, Diane Morr at: blood@FultonCountyRedCross.org In 1947 the Red Cross launched the first national civilian blood program which revolutionized blood banking in the Untied States. The Red Cross had been informally recruiting blood donors for a few hospital as early as the late 1930's. Locally, the Fulton County Chapter has carried on this tradition. We have established strong community ties and gained the support of volunteer blood donors to meet the needs of hospitals in our region. Bloodmobile Coordinator is Diane Morr and her committee members are Virginia Bamonte (Archbold), Barb Hite (Delta), Margaret Sutton (Fayette) and Marle Weber (Wauseon). The Chapter sponsors over 35 bloodmobiles each year. These bloodmobiles collected 2797 pints of lifesaving blood last year. Each pint of blood can help up to three patients- depending on the individual needs of each patient. The Chapter also provides volunteer who make emergency runs to/from Fulton County Health Center and Toledo Blood Services or Medical College of Ohio transporting blood for patients in immediate need of blood. General requirements
Donors must wait eight weeks between donations, and are encouraged to have eaten within the last four hours. Increasing fluid intake prior to donation is especially important! Drink plenty of milk, juice, or water. To help to have a good iron level, it
is suggested that for a few days before you try to donate that you eat plenty of protein, green leafy vegetables and cut down on your caffeine intake- especially caffeine pop and coffee.

The goal of the drive is to help educate children and their parents on the importance of blood donation and encourage the parents to become regular donorsand hopefully get the children interested so when they are old enough they will also become donors.

Our Board member Ed Gajdostik gives blood at the Evergreen Community Bloodmobile
Over a year ago Walter Seeman from Swanton needed 66 units of blood to survive a ruptured aneurysm. Doctors told him he had lost 90% of his blood during his ordeal. During surgery he was given 27 units of blood about 5 times what the human body holds! The following day he used 37 more units of blood. His surgeon had to call for every unit of his rare blood type in Northwest Ohio. Walt made a miraculous recovery, so to return the favor to those who had donated the blood that helped save his life, he and his wife, Margie hosted a blood drive in Swanton on January 30, 2007 to help replenish the stock. He also celebrated his upcoming birthday at the event a birthday he might never have lived to see without the help of his gifted surgeons and the blood that so many donors had givenhe truly received the Gift of Life.
Her son, Zach, recruited Jennifer Pease, a teacher at Leggett School to donate blood at the Elm Street Schools first "Pint-Size" Bloodmobile. Zach is a third grade student at the school. The students were responsible for recruiting donors for their drive. The drive collected 73 pints of blood - well over their goal.
