First Aid - Responding to Emergencies is available
through many local colleges and universities. The course uses lecture,
discussion and simulated emergency situations to deliver information on
recognizing and caring for many different types of emergencies.
Lifeguard Training The American Red Cross is introducing the new Life guarding program, a comprehensive training program providing flexibility. The program is designed to teach lifeguards, as professional rescuers, the skills needed to prevent injuries and prepare for and respond appropriately to drowning, injury, breathing and cardiac emergencies. The program includes: Guard Start –pre-lifeguard training Lifeguard/Attendant training – four stand-alone training courses Lifeguard Management course - for those who are directly or indirectly involved in the supervision of lifeguards Aquatic Examiner Service – Red Cross services that support the work of lifeguard management Optional Administering Emergency Oxygen, Blood borne Pathogens, Training and Basic Water Rescue courses, in-service training, and Water Safety presentations Program release date: December 31, 2006 Highlights of Implementation: All current Lifeguard Instructors can register on Instructor’s Corner on the Red Cross website. (www.redcross.org) to self-update their authorization. Existing participant materials cannot be used after June 30, 2007 – old materials will not be replaced so when existing stock is gone –the updated materials must be used. We will not be ordering any old materials. To maintain authorization ALL instructors must orient to the new materials by December 31, 2007 Current LGT instructors whose current authorization expires on December 31, 2006 and qualify for reauthorization can only be reauthorized for one year with an expiration date being December 31, 2007. Methods available to update to new materials are either a self-update through Instructor’s Corner or attend a Group Orientation session. The course has been updated to the latest science for First Aid/CPR/AED The LGT program includes updated content for Blood borne Pathogens Training and Administrating Emergency Oxygen LGT Training has been organized into four distinct stand-alone courses better to meet facility-specific needs. These four courses include a brand new shallow-water training program for those whose duties are limited to water up to 4 feet deep. It adds new content & instructor tools including Epinephrine Auto-Injector and Asthma Inhaler CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer is now part of the new LGT Program Upon release of the program materials all current instructors will receive a Life guarding Instructor Trainer kit free of charge-for a very limited time. Instructor will need to purchase a copy of the new Instructor’s Manual with CD-ROM.
For Professional Rescuers Our professional rescuer courses are designed for people who have a job-related duty to respond in an emergency. This includes nurses, law enforcement and EMS personnel, fire fighters, business and industry response teams, lifeguards, flight attendants, and others who must take action in emergency situations. Emergency Response is a comprehensive course designed for training first responders. The course follows the 1995 US DOT First Responder National Standard Curriculum and meets ECC Guidelines. CPR for the Professional Rescuer is a 9 hour course that teaches a variety of skills including one- and two rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation masks and bag-valve masks for ventilating victims, and how to respond in special rescue situations such as drowning. AED Essentials. Participants learn the importance of AEDs, and how to use an AED properly. Oxygen Administration. Lay persons and professional rescuers can learn when and how to use supplemental oxygen and breathing devices. Professional rescuers also learn advanced skills in airway management. Preventing Disease Transmission. A two-hour training module for employers and employees who, while on the job, may be exposed to blood or other body fluids that could cause infection. Employers can offer this program as part of their compliance with OSHA regulations.
